Past Perfect is a collection of honest snapshots that may even have been taken years ago. The album title is no coincidence: past perfect tense is often described as the completed past tense. Some of the songs were written before the pandemic – "maybe that's why the songs feel so far away," says singer and guitarist Christina Lessiak, who is responsible for the lyrics in Crush. For the band, Past Perfect feels like an old photo album that you can dig out and revisit past situations and stages of your life. In the here and now, with a certain distance to the matter.

What used to be fed by washed-out shoegaze, indie set pieces and dreampop has undergone a pop upgrade in the album process and in studios between Vienna and Graz. For the most part, the songs were also produced by Crush themselves. Thus the time of understatement is over. Big, bigger, pop - music history has often put forward this thesis in recent decades. Crush surrender to this superlative with pleasure. Big names appear between the lines and notes, between the polyphonic chorus choir and lots of harmonies, between synth hooks and guitar riffs: All Crush members can agree on icons like Kate Bush, Blondie, ABBA and Fleetwood Mac as a common musical denominator, a consensus that also subconsciously influenced the songwriting on Past Perfect.

It comes as no surprise that the single Where Flowers Grow has become a bittersweet symphony to moving on. Although this song is the closing track on the album, it acts as the centerpiece of the record for Crush. As if a story has been told to the end and this conclusion leaves room for something new again. A song as a beacon of hope, looking forward to a flowery future - with all its in-between hues.
